Should you convert ICO to JPG?

You need a favicon or icon as a JPG for a document or form.

Do this for photographs, where JPG saves a lot of space for a difference that’s hard to see. Keep the ICO if the picture is a screenshot, a diagram or anything with text and hard edges, which JPG smudges.

JPG is also the more widely supported of the two: it opens everywhere, while ICO is opens almost everywhere.

ICO is a small container that holds the same icon at several sizes; JPG is a lossy photo format that trades detail you can’t see for much smaller files. Use JPG for photographs you are sending, uploading or printing, especially when a form or app is fussy about formats.

How to convert ICO to JPG

  1. 01

    Add your ICO

Drop your ICO image onto the box, or click to choose it. It is read from your disk and stays there.

  2. 02

    Check the settings

The output is already set to JPG. Change the quality if you want to; the defaults suit most files.

  3. 03

    Save the JPG

Press convert and save the JPG. Several files come back together as a ZIP.

What changes when ICO becomes JPG

ICO keeps everything, JPG does not

ICO stores the picture exactly. JPG throws away detail to save space, and the quality setting decides how much. At the default of 90 almost nobody can tell on a photograph; on text, lines and flat color the loss shows sooner, as soft halos around edges.

JPG can’t hold transparency

Any transparent area in the ICO has to become a solid color, because JPG has no alpha channel. The background setting decides which color; white suits documents and most uploads, but pick the color of the page it will sit on if you know it, because it can’t be undone later.

Expect a smaller file

JPG usually stores the same content in less space than ICO. ICO: A full favicon with every size is usually under 100 KB. JPG: A 12-megapixel phone photo is usually 2–5 MB.

This page is put together from our notes on each format, choosing only what is true of ICO and JPG, so every pairing states the same facts the same way. How these pages are made.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • About the ICO. Renaming a PNG to favicon.ico works in some browsers and silently fails in others. A real ICO holds several sizes so each place picks the right one.
  • About the JPG. Re-saving a JPG again and again degrades it, because each save compresses the already compressed version. Keep an original and export to JPG once, at the end.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Questions

Will converting ICO to JPG lose quality?

JPG is lossy, so some detail is discarded. The quality slider decides how much; the default of 90 is chosen so the difference is invisible in almost every photo.

What happens to a transparent background when converting ICO to JPG?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, white by default.
